Dentistry

A dentist's job includes treatment of diseased teeth and gums, extraction of irreparably damaged teeth, filling of painful cavities, surgery of the mouth and jaw, corrective work to align and straighten teeth, making and fitting of dentures etc.

Specialisations:
The field of Dentistry offers infinite scope for specialisation
Orthodontics: deals with the aligning and straightening of teeth.
Oral and Maxillofacial: experts work on the jaws and the mouth.
Paediatric dentists: are experts on dental ailments of children.
Periodontics: is the care of gums and the bone supporting the
teeth. Prosthodontics: is concerned with making of artificial teeth.
Endodontics: specialises in root canal treatment.
Oral pathology: is the study of diseases of the mouth.

Job Market: Jobs are available in hospitals and polyclinics. Self employment is also highly lucrative.

Training Programme: The basic qualification for joining a Degree Programme in Dentistry (BDS) is successful completion of 10+2 course with physics, chemistry and biology. Entry is usually through an Entrance Examination. The BDS course involves four years of study and one year of internship.

Post graduate courses (MDS) are offered in - Peridontology, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Orthodontia, Operative Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Pedodontrics, Prosthetics Dentistry, Oral Pathology and Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. While choosing a Dental Programme it is important to ensure that it is recognised by the Dental Council of India.
