Fisheries & Marine Studies

Fisheries & Marine Studies

The biological study of marine life as well as the study of the geological and mineral wealth of the ocean fall in the orbit of the science of fisheries. The field of fisheries has opened up new areas of specialisation and employment. The commercial cultivation of fish and the scientific breeding and management of marine life is one area of potential employment. Professionals can also engage in R&D activities for these industrial units or for government and state bodies. Lot of job opportunities are also available in the training sector.

Job Markets:
The specialist in fisheries can find jobs in marine industrial units as Farm Managers and Hatchery Managers. The farm manager designs and constructs the fish breeding units and monitors their technicalities and infrastructural specificities. Harvest Managers are concerned with managing the actual breeding process and related tasks. Post Harvest Processors prepare the seafood and dress them for the domestic and export market. Research work in aquaculture involves improving the quality of seafood and upgrading processing technologies. Fisheries Inspectors are involved in transporting fish seed to the different hatcheries. At the base of the hierarchy are the skilled workers like fishermen, divers, crew members of fishing vessels, fish cultivators and farm workers.

Training Programme:
Training in the field is imparted at the postgraduate level. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) conducts one month shrimp farm management course for graduates and post graduates in zoology, marine biology, chemistry and civil engineering . Candidates with B.Tech and M.Tech are offered specialisation in marine farm construction. Post graduate diploma courses in shrimp farming, prawn and fish technology, hatchery management etc. are also available.
