Environmental studies offers opportunities for differ-ent kinds of specialisation. Forests and Wildlife Management involves the protection and management of the forest resources and wild life. Certain environmental science programmes which are related to Botany & Zoology train the student in the identification and conservation of rare flora and fauna. Environmental scientists have a serious role in the industry in the management, planning and control of pollution and treatment and detoxification of industrial effluents. Wasteland management, bio-diversity, afforestation, population watch, prevention of environmental hazards are some important areas dealt by eco specialists. Global issues such as protection of ozone layer and effect of ultraviolet radiations on the environment are major concerns of environmental scientists. Environmental engineers apply the principles of engineering to anticipate and avert environmental hazards. Various government and private organisations also conduct R & D activities in the field. Environmental journalism is another important functional area for the specialist in this sector.

Job Market:
A wide variety of jobs are available as environmental scientists in major industries, environmental engineers, environmental journalists, environmental biologists, environmental modell-ers, forest conservators, wildlife and marine life experts etc. Jobs are also available in the academic sector and in consultancies. Training Programmes: Aspirants can start at the undergraduate level by joining either a 3 year BSc course in Environmental Science or a 4 year BE course in environmental engineering. Eligibility for both courses is 10+2 in science. This can be followed by a 2 year MSc course in Environmental science or a 3 semester ME/MTech course in Environmental Engineering. Those who are interested in a career in Forestry can apply for the Indian Forest Services Examination conducted by UPSC. The State Public Service Commission conducts State Forest Service Examination for Science and Engineering graduates. Range level examinations are also held by state governments to recruit Range Officers. The Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal conducts degree and masters programmes in Forestry Management. Post graduate diploma in Environmental Management is offered at Vikram University, Ujjain for those who have graduated in Science/Agricultural Engineering etc. SNDT Women's University, Mumbai conducts an 18 month P.G. Diploma in Environment and Development exclusively for female candidates who are graduates/postgraduates in any discipline.
