Statistical and Mathematical Sciences

Statistical and Mathematical Sciences

Statisticians use various methods like questionnaires, surveys
and diagnostic tests to collect, verify and interpret data. Statistical
techniques are useful in the prediction of population growth,
making economic projections, providing quality control tests for
manufactured products and enabling managers and government
officials to make decisions.

The profession:
Statisticians have a serious role to play in various
fields of activity. In the government sector, the data provided
by the statistician influences government policy making. In the
marketing sector, market research statistical studies help to guage
the pulse of the consumer and to condition products to suit the
needs of the consumer. The Statistical analysis helps a marketing
professional to place the product competitively in the market
scenario. Mathematicians and statisticians work in the fields of
planning, industry, commerce, insurance, finance, medical, social
and agricultural research. The apex body in the official statistical
system of the country is the Department of Statistics in the Ministry
of Planning and Programme Implementation. The Department
comprises the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), The National
Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), the Computer Centre and
the Pay & Accounts Office. It administers the Indian Statistical
Services (ISS) as well as the Indian Statistical Institutions (ISI)

Job Market:
The qualified Statisticians can find jobs in public
sector organisations, financial institutions and major corporate
conglomerates. They can also work as planning experts, computer
programmers, system analysts, quality control advisors,
market analysts etc.

Training Programme:
In this field, a high level of specialised
training has to be obtained in order to be well placed in industry.
At least a post-graduate degree or Ph.D. is required. P.G. Programmes
The educational qualification required is a degree in Maths and/or
Statistics.

The Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta is a prestigious Institution
offering: B.Stat, M. Stat., MS (Quantitative Economics)
M.Tech (Quality, Reliability & Operations Research). Examinations
for Senior Diploma in Statistics (SDS) and Junior Diploma
in Statistics (JDS) which are recognised as equal to MSc.
