Geology

Geology

The vast realm of Geology provides for careers as Ge-ographers, Geologists and Geophysicists. Geographers study the physical phenomena on the earth's surface such as the topography and climate of particular regions and understand how these affect the people living there. Geologists find their locus of study, deep in the bowels of the earth. The formation and changes in rock structure and the exploration of mineral and oil deposits fall in the purview of the geologist's project. Geophysicists combine the knowledge of physics, chemistry and maths to understand the earth's atmosphere, the play of gravitational, magnetic and electrical forces, the specificities of ground and surface water, the mysterious dynamics of oceans etc. Geologists and Geophysicists usually work in mining companies or use their engineering skills to negotiate problems related to constructing dams, tunnels, highways etc.

There are numerous sub-disciplines in the field of Geology such as Mineralogy, Oceanography, Marine Geology, Petroleum Geology, Paleontology, Seismology, Volcanology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology and Meteorology. The study of mineral formation is the field of Mineralogists. Oceanographers explore the chemical, biological and geological properties of the oceans. Marine Geologists study the ocean basin and the coastal environments on continental borders. Petroleum geologists investigate oil and natural gas resources.

Paleontologists study fossils in order to know more about past life. Seismologists analyse earthquakes. Volcanologists investigate volcanic phenomena. Hydrologists study the properties of surface and underground water. Hydrogeologists investigate the geological aspects of surface waters. Meteorologists are concerned with the study of weather phenomena. Job Market: Geologists can find employment in mines, oil exploration companies, seismological and meteorological departments, large construction conglomerates, related consultancy firms and in government organisations like Geological Survey of India.

Training Programmes: Programmes in geology are offered by national institutions like IIT, Kharagpur, BHU Institute of Technology, Varanasi and School of Mines, Dhanbad. The entry to courses in these institutions is through the IIT-JEE. The basic requirement for a career in geosciences is post graduation. The aspirant can start with a bachelor's degree in geology/physics/engineering. For the P.G programme, the student can specialise in areas of his choice which will later help him in fixing his career.

Joint Admission Test
General Information: From the Academic Session 2004-2005, Indian Institutes of Technology have started conducting
a Joint Admission Test to M.Sc (JAM) for admission to M.Sc and other post B.Sc. programmes at the IITs. The Joint Admission Test to M.Sc (2005) will be held on May 7 & 8, 2005 (Saturday and Sunday) for admission to the below mentioned Academic Programmes for the Session 2005-2006. The Test is open to Indian Nationals, irrespective of caste, creed and gender. There is no age restriction.

Structure of JAM 2005
JAM 2005 will have the following eight Test Papers of three hours duration each. A candidate may appear at the most, in two Test Papers (with payment of additional fee for the second Test Paper), subject to the restrictions of the Test schedule. The Test Papers and corresponding Academic Programmes offered by different IITs for admission are as
