The fied of medical studies has witnessed widespread development over the year. The medical profession is constantly refurbished by new ideas and new technologies.
Today the focus of medicine is on specialisation and even super-specialisations within specialist areas. Thus climbing the ladder of success is more complicated and arduous than even before. But the positive aspect is that the opportunities for medical aspirants have multiplied. The diagnosis and treatment that was earlier handled singly by the general practitioner is today divided amongst a posse of specialists and with better results. Thus specialisation is inevitable for the medical student who seeks to carve a niche for himself in this profession.
The major areas of specialisation are:
General Medicine: these practitioners usually perform the role of the family doctor. They diagnose and treat the every day and sundry ailments. In the event of an intractable
sickness, the general practitioner recommends specialist intervention.
Qualification:
An MBBS degree with a 3 year M.D course in General Medicine or a Postgraduate diploma course in General Medicine.
Anaesthesiologists: Assist in the surgical process to make the surgical procedure as painless as possible.
General Surgery: is a specialisa-tion where the doctor is trained in Surgery for all organs of the body. The surgeon can later opt to specia-lise in specific areas. Performance of surgery and post operative care are the forte of the general surgeon.
Qualification: MBBS with a 3 year MS course.
Paediatrics: is a specialised area in medicine that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of children’s diseases.
Qualification: MBBS with 3 year MD course in Paediatrics.
Cardiology: studies the diseases related to the heart and thecirculatory system.
Qualification: MBBS + 3 year course in cardio-thoracic surgery.
Obstetrics-Gynaecology: studies the diagnosis and treatment of conditions specific to the female reproductive system.
Qualification: MBBS + MS in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Neurology: treats diseases and disorders related to the brain and the nervous system.
Qualification: MBBS + MS in Neurosurgery.
Dermatology:focusses on problems related to the skin.
Qualification: MBBS + MD in Dermatology.
Gastroenterology: involves treatment of diseases related to liver, pancreas, stomach, intestine, bowels and gall bladder.
Opthalmology: is the treatment of diseases to the eye.
Qualification: MBBS + MD/MS in Opthalmology.
ENT/Ear Nose Throat Specialists: treat disorders of the Ear, Nose and Throat.
Qualification: MBBS + MS in ENT surgery.
Psychiatry: This is a branch that specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
Qualification: MBBS + MD in psychiatry.
Pathology: is the branch of medicine that investigates the cause of various disease and the possibilities for their prevetion.
Qualification: MBBS + MD in Pathology.
Other specialisations available are community medicine, physiology, venereology, communicable diseases, anatomy, plastic surgery, nephrology, urology, endocrinology, haematology etc.Doctors with post graduation can venture further afield and do a Ph.D in any specialised area of medicine. Those who possess MD/MRCP/MS/FRCS can complete the Doctoral programme in 2 years. For those who have an M.Sc in Medicine, the Ph.D programme takes 3 years.
Job Market: Employment opportunities exist in hospitals, nursing homes, polyclinics, health centres, Medical Colleges and Research Institutions. There is also scope for self employment.
Training Programme:
Training in medicine begins after successful completion of 10+2/equivalent in Physics/Chemistry and Biology. There are Entrance Examinations conducted on an All India basis as well as statewise for seats in the Medical Colleges. The test is based on 12th standard syllabus. The Central Board of Secondary Examination, Delhi conducts an All India Pre Medical/Pre Dental Entrance Exam. for admission to 15% of the total seats for medical/dental courses run by Union of India, State Governments, Municipal and local bodies in India except in the states of J & K and Andhra Pradesh.

The states also conduct their own Pre Medical Entrance Examination for domiciled candidates. These examinations are announced in January and conducted in March-April. There are also some national level institutes where admission does not hinge on domicile status. These institutions admit candidates through an All India Entrance Test.
