Tourism includes leisure and business travel, package tours, adventure tourism, eco tourism etc. A wide variety of jobs are available in the tourism industry. The top administrative brass in the Tourism Directorates are involved in the planning and promotion of tourism activities. They explore new avenues for tourism promotion and innovate and widen the scope of the services in this sector. Information Assistants at the offices of tourism departments disburse information regarding the tourist spots and services available there and help to plan the itinerary of the tourists. Job Market:
Employment opportunities exist as - tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, adventure and leisure tourism providers, conservors of heritage sites etc. Other potential jobs are in the clerical and administrative side. Manufacture and sale of handicraft items, marketing of souvenirs etc. are possible sources of employment in the tourism sector. A two-year full-time post graduate programme leading to the degree of Master of Tourism Administration is being offered by several institutes. The programme is approved by Govt. of India, Ministry of Tourism under the network arrangement of the Indian Institute of Tourism & Travel Management. The MTA programme is the first of its kind in India, designed by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with World Tourism Organisation to turn out world-class professionals in the tourism industry.
