Nursing

Nursing: A Profession of Compassion

one kind word can warm three winter months" -
"The Lady with the Lamp" is a great image that comes to anyone who thinks of nursing. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) is the all-time great in the profession. Her innovations in improving sanitation could dramatically reduce the rate of mortality among the wounded soldiers in the Crimean War from a stunning 42% to a mere 2%. As they go up the professional ladder, they will have to shoulder responsibilities of supervision, management and liaison work in the hospital.

Nurses have opportunities not only in hospitals, but in sanatoriums, health resorts, orphanages, industrial houses, old age homes. With the progressive rise in life expectancy, the need for domestic nursing and geriatric care is shooting up.

As regards remuneration, a junior nurse may start in with a monthly salary between Rs. 3,000 and 5,000. As she rises in seniority and acquires additional qualifications, her monthly emoluments may go up.

The profession is mostly a preserve of women, although there are male nurses as well. In the State a few seats in the B.Sc Nursing course stand reserved for men.

Indian nurses have earned a good name the world over, for their competence and commitment. They are in great demand in places like the U.S. and many of the European countries. The salary levels overseas are attractive, often more than a lakh of Indian rupees a month. The salary levels in the U.S. are far higher than what we have in our country. In the U.S., the candidates have to pass certain eligibility examinations and satisfy the prescribed official formalities before they are appointed as nurses.

The emphasis that is now being laid in healthcare systems calls for the services of a large number of nurses.

There are two types of basic qualifications - B.Sc Nursing (4 years of study after plus two with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects) and GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery - 3 years of study after plus two with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects). Those with GNM followed by some experience
have opportunities for securing the B.Sc Nursing Degree through a 2 year Post Certificate programme in a few institutions in the country. Many of the nursing colleges offer the 2 year Nursing programme.

The first-level general nurse can specialise in areas like paediatric nursing, neuro surgical nursing, cardiovascular and thoracic nursing, obstetrics and gynaecology nursing, psychiatric nursing, cancer nursing, and nursing education & administration. For practising as a nurse, the candidate should secure registration from a State Nursing Council that would verify the authenticity of the qualification. Apart from nursing colleges and nursing schools, a number of hospitals have also been authorised to conduct academic courses in nursing. Before joining a private hospital for undergoing a course of study, the candidates or their parents should necessarily confirm that the hospital stands recognised by the concerned State Nursing Council of the Indian Nursing Council for conducting the nursing course. There have been instances where
girls were taken in for training by hospitals without authorisation from the council for running the course. Such a situation will lead to disappointment, since the candidates will not be permitted to sit for the examination, acquire the nursing qualification, or practise as nurses.

It is often said that nursing is not merely a profession but a vocation. A compassionate nature and a staunch commitment to the ailing and the disabled are the defining characteristics of this profession. Nursing is by no means playing second fiddle to the services and skills of a doctor. On the other hand, it is an indispensable enerally speaking, it is women who show a natural interest in this profession than men. This is one of the few domains of work that is almost totally dominated by women.
