Town Planning

Town Planning as a Career

Town planning is a profession in itself with further specialisations such as environmental planning, housing planning, industrial, recreational and transport planning. Before making a plan, the town planner has to assess and evaluate all available information. This involves surveying the area and consulting those in the government’s health, sanitation and transport departments besides working with architects, lawyers, civil engineers, statisticians, sociologists and economists. As much of the information is technical and statistical in nature, computers are extensively used to analyze and interpret the data in the form of charts and graphs. Besides being computer savvy, you must also possess administrative and managerial skills, ability to write reports, address meetings. After your Master’s in Town Planning, you can join a firm of housing developers or government organisations like the Municipal Development Authority or private planning consultants. There are openings in tourism boards, health authorities, construction companies and environmental organisations. You can also switch to consulting after sufficient experience. Master’s level courses in town planning and related areas are offered at various universities. Eligibility is BArch, BE (Civil) or Master’s degree in Geog/Socio/Eco/Law.
